Before you drill into a wall to hang a shelf or a TV mount, you need to know what’s behind the surface — wooden studs or metal framing, but also electrical wiring and pipes you definitely don’t want to hit. A good detection device (often called a stud finder or multi-scanner) takes the guesswork out of it.
How detection devices work
Most consumer models use one or a combination of sensing methods: capacitive sensors detect changes in density behind the wall (useful for finding wood studs or cavities), magnetic sensors pick up ferrous fasteners like nails and screws, and dedicated live-wire detectors sense the electromagnetic field around energized AC wiring. The more capable “multi-scanners” combine several of these methods and can detect wood, metal, and live wiring in a single pass.
What to look for when buying
- Detection depth: Basic models typically sense a few centimeters into drywall; better units reach deeper, which matters for thicker walls or plastered masonry.
- Multiple modes: Look for separate (or combined) modes for wood, metal, and live AC wiring — a single-purpose stud finder won’t warn you about wiring.
- Calibration: Devices that self-calibrate against the actual wall material tend to give more reliable readings than fixed-sensitivity models.
- Clear indication: A mix of visual (LED/display) and audible signals makes it easier to pinpoint edges precisely while you’re holding a ladder or working overhead.
- Build quality: A comfortable grip and a durable housing matter if you’re using the tool regularly on job sites rather than once a year at home.
A quick safety note
No detection device is 100% infallible — thick tile, metallic wallpaper, or unusual wall construction can all produce false readings. When in doubt, scan from multiple angles, check for outlets and switches nearby (a strong hint that wiring runs through that section of wall), and start with a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot before committing to a larger opening.
